Melanotan I and Melanotan II are synthetic analogs of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) that have been studied for their interactions with the melanocortin receptor system.

Melanotan I (MT-I) is primarily studied for its activity at the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R), a receptor involved in melanogenesis and pigmentation pathways. A related pharmaceutical formulation of afamelanotide is FDA-approved for a specific medical indication; however, research-grade Melanotan I products are not FDA-approved drugs and should not be represented as such.

Melanotan II (MT-II) has broader activity across multiple melanocortin receptor subtypes and has been investigated in research involving melanocortin signaling, pigmentation pathways, energy homeostasis, and other physiological processes.

MT-I and MT-II differ in their receptor selectivity and pharmacological profiles, making them subjects of continued laboratory and scientific investigation.
